From the perspective of personal encounters, case studies review and intellectual construction, this paper addresses the dimensions and implications of Fujian studies and Southeast Asian Fujian studies. It is argued that in Fujian studies, the term "Fujian" should be constructed or reconstructed not only as a local administrative polity, but more important, as a geo-political and geo-economic and socio-cultural community. Southeast Asian Fujian studies should be of relevance to Fujian and Fujian studies: in terms of an individual project, it is a study of Southeast Asian Fujianese as a research subject and a focal and analytical unit; while in the meantime it should also have a large theoretical concern and framework in relation to Fujian studies, Chinese studies and even Southeast Asian Studies as a whole, no matter whether this correlation and parameter is comparative, local and analytical.
