This paper mainly studies the profound influence left on the early production of Chinese movies (especially in terms of scriptwriting) by the Mandarin Duck and Butterfly School, when its writers entered the filmdom around 1921. This study also alms at highlighting the lessons for today's film creation from the two pre-1949 climaxes in the production of commercialized films, brought about by this school, which the new vernacular and left-wing filmdom had regarded as an “adverse current”.
