The Shandong Yanzhou Mining Group will invest 2.145 billion RMB in a 500-kt/a methanol unit in Zhoucheng, Shandong, which will apply advanced production technology using its own high-sulfur coal as the starting material. This project has been listed as one of major key construction projects of Shandong province in 2005. The construction duration will be 20 months, and the unit will consume 720 kt of high-sulfur coal a year. Massive dissemination of technology for manufacturing methanol based on high-sulfur coal can extend approximately the duration of coal exploitation in Shandong province by 25 years.
