Objective: To investigate HDV and complicated by HBV infection among drug abusers. Methods: HBsAg and HDV - IgG serum antibody of 1080 drug abusers recruited for drug rehabilitation from September,2004 to January,20(O were tested and analyzed. Self- designed questionnaires were adopted for the survey of drug abuse mutes. Results: Of the 1080 drug abusers, there were 156 (14.4%) HDV infected cases, including 153(98.1%) intravenous drug abusers(IDUS),accounting for 15.9% of IDUS(960 cases), and 3 non- injecting drug users, accounting for 2.5% (3/120) showing significant difference( P 〈 0.01). The rate of HDV infections in those who shared needles was 21.3 % (132/620), which was higher than that (6.9%) who did not share(21/340), P 〈 0.001. Of the 156 HDV infected cases, 145 cases were complicated by I-IBV, and among them 73.1% (106/145) had abnormal liver function. Conclusion: The rate of HDV infection in drug abusers is high and most of them are infected by HBV too. Sharing needles is the main reason of HDV and HBV transmission, which calls on attention to take measures to prevent it.
