"The West Line Has No War": A Novel of "the Lost Generation" Which Possesses Representation More——Compares with Hemingway's "The Sun Also Rises"

“迷惘的一代”的代表作一般认为是海明威的《太阳照常升起》,而实际上《西线无战事》比其更具代表性,因为后者比前者更为鲜明深刻地表现了“迷惘的一代”的两个主题:迷惘与厌战情绪。它不仅深刻地表现了青年士兵的迷惘情绪,而且展示了其形成的动态过程,并抓住年龄等因素深入分析了青年迷惘的原因;小说还通过对战场残酷景象的自然主义描绘,从人“生”的本能以及人道主义的立场等多个角度深刻揭示了帝国主义战争的不合理性,表达了极度的厌战情绪。

Commonly Hemingway＇s novel ＂The Sun Also Rises＂ is deemed to be the magnum opus of ＂the Lost Generation＂. But actually Remarque＇s ＂The West Line Has No War＂ shows representation more than it. Because the latter expresses the two themes of ＂The Lost Gener- ation＂ which is perplexed mood and war- weariness more brightly and profoundly than the former. ＂The West Line Has No War＂ has shown not only the young soldier＇s perplexed mood deeply but also the dynamic forming process of it. Besides, the novel also analyzed the young men＇ s perplexed mood＇ s reason in depth by catching the factor of age. In addition, the work has announced deeply the imperialism war＇ s unreason- ableness by describing the cruelty scenes in the battlefields with the way of naturalism and from a lot of other angles such as the instinct grown of people and position of humanitarianism, having expressed the extreme war - weariness. In this paper, we will also analyze the reasons of this phenomenon.
