Silence is an important part of the social communication of the Japanese with rich connotations, emotions and significance. For the Japanese, silence sometimes can convey more of the intention of the speaker than language and it is a heritage of the traditional culture highly dependant on the context. Silence also reflects their collectivism and humiliation-felt culture as well as their cultural instinct of “heart-to-heart communication”.
