The novel with polyphony is a sort of novel with opening, incompleteness and undecidedness in which main characters narrate stories and create contradictory or controversial images. This style of creation has been widely employed by British and American literary modernists since the 20th century. As one of the greatest and the most obscure novels of Southern literary flag William Faulkner in America, Absalom, Absalom! takes the lead in the employment of polyphony, in which the four main characters and its readers uncover the central character Sutpen's mysterious story and create his contradictory, controversial and kaleidoscopic image: a savage monster in the slavery, an aggressive hero in the westward exploitation and a hideous racial discriminist in American society, and through which the four main characters and readers condemn or praise Sutpen and the old South, and probe some causes of the rising and falling of Sutpen, his own family and the old South.
