On the Creating of Miaoyu from the Symbolic Meanings of Jade, Plum Blossom and Tea

《红楼梦》中的妙玉是极其特殊的人物,曹雪芹是按中国典型的文人雅士来创作妙玉的,在妙玉身上少有闺阁气息而多文人雅风,曹雪芹通过玉、梅、茶塑造一位崇尚自然、高洁白恃、不拘礼俗、自由放任、我行我素、落拓不羁的名士形象。

Miaoyu is a very special character in “The Dreams of Read Chamber”. Cao Xueqin created Miaoyu on the basis of the typical image of a refined scholar. Therefore, she is more like a refined scholar with refined tastes than a young lady of a rich family. Cao Xueqin created this noble, pure, unrestrained, unconventional and uninhibited scholarly young lady who persists in her old ways and advocates natural manner by analyzing the symbolic meanings of jade, plum blossom and tea.
