This paper reviews how the designer＇ s interpretation of the text gains importance in contemporary stage productions at a time when design tends to transcend the limits posed by stage directions and literal words of the script. It then examines how the ensuring demand on the designer to propose a visual reading may be met in professional training by adding a new element of specific thematic use of larger space than is traditionally defined in the course modules.
