The stream - of- consciousness novel is a style of writing without the conventional devices of dialogue and description. It was developed by authors at the beginning of the 20th century to express in words the flow of a character's thoughts and feelings. There are no established principles or definitions of stream - of - consciousness novel. Virginia Woolf, a twentieth - century English author experimented in one of her most admired novels “Mrs. Dalloway” with various stream- of- consciousness narrative techniques. “Mrs. Dalloway” examines one day in the life of a minor, sometimes dim woman, but Woolf's unique use of the interior monologue with the third person voice and her skilful shifts in perspective create a complex portrait of Clarissa Dalloway and her relationships with other people. Thus, the novel reveals the very state of human existence in Woolf' s time.
