Review of "Entering the Master's Sanctuary": Power, Belief and Legi timacy in Traditional China by Chin-shing Huang

在传统社会里,孔庙恰是文化力量与政治力量交汇之点;而作为"世界性的历史宗教",孔庙祀典也引人入胜。黄进兴著《优入圣域》一书,最具意义的就是对历史上孔庙祭祀制度的研究。本文结合黄先生的研究思路和此书的成书背景,对这一研究的具体成果加以述析和评论,并尝试提出笔者对潜在的研究空间之理解。

“Entering the Master＇s Sanctuary” （“优入圣域”） ： Power, Belief and Legitimacy in Traditional China, by professor Chin-shing Huang （黄进兴）, discusses the shaping of a national cult, the worship of the Confucian temple, the relationship between state intention and rites that state instituted for the fulfillment of its intention in imperial China. It sees state rituals both as mechanisms that started the legitimate operation of social institutions and as means to cultivate state-sanctioned values. The practice of the worship of the Confucian temple is an indispensable link between the political and cultural systems of the Chinese empire. This paper tried to point out the foreground in the study field besides comment on Huang＇s book.
