原始岩画的象征性几乎是天籁所成。而象征性岩画俱出自新石器时代,且都属于巫术性岩画,这正可契近象征之源。正是原始象征思维,使原始岩画充满诗性。中国岩画的象征分为四种类型:本体象征型、拟象象征型、符号象征型和动作象征型。象征岩画所具有的强烈的神秘感、造型形象内涵丰富、个性鲜明以及创作中形式和意义的巧妙结合的审美特征,对于今天的绘画艺术也有参照意义。
