胡应麟认为,史注必须资料宏富,考订精详,辨正误谬,评论是非,如此,史注就可成为“史之忠臣,古之益友”。胡应麟在自己的注史实践中,贯彻了他对史注的要求和认识。

Hu Ying-lin held the notion that the historical document interpretation should be based on rich resources and the comment and correction should he accurate and in detail. By doing so, the historical document interpretation can he reliable and beneficial. In his own practice of the historical document interpretation, Hu Ying-lin carried out his understandings of this notion.
