Comment on the Theme of May 4th Movement

“五四”的主题是政治挤压下的启蒙。“五四”整个发展过程中启蒙始终不能完全脱离政治。“五四”落潮,并不是“救亡压倒启蒙”,而是启蒙自身发展和实现现代民族国家必然的客观要求。“五四”启蒙运动是不彻底的,这有其发展的历史性和客观性。因此不能脱离政治孤立地看待启蒙。

The theme of May 4th is enlightenment under political pressure. May 4th ebbed at last because of the requirements of enlightment＇ s development and realizing the establishment of a modern nation. It vanished not because of “saving the nation from extinction overwhelms enlightenment”. There are historical and objective reasons for this enlightenment to be complete and thorough. From its appearance, development and result, we know that enlightenment is closely related to politics and it is under political pressure. In the whole development of May 4th, Enlightenment can＇t be seperated from Politics. May 4th ebbed and the reason isn＇t “what saves the nation from extinction overwhelms enlightenment” and is that enlightenment development and modern nation establishment requires. May 4th enlightenment movement can＇t complete which is inevitability and objectivity. From May 4th＇ appearance, evolution and result we can see that enlightenment contracts with politics tightly and it is under political pressure. We can＇t consider enlightenment independently.
