Pearl Buck Studies: a Panel Discussion

郭英剑认为当今中国大陆赛珍珠研究存在的主要问题是缺乏对赛珍珠众多作品的详细解读和分析,因此赛珍珠的文学价值被有意无意地忽略或是贬低了,因此,应该加强对赛珍珠文学作品的研究。姚君伟认为新时期以来,中国学者已经在赛珍珠非小说研究方面取得了许多成绩,从而促成了赛珍珠研究“从小说到非小说”的转向。但是,我们亟须加强对其非小说的研究,因为赛珍珠的这类作品非常丰富,而且它们更直接地体现了她毕生所倡导的异质文化差异共存和互相尊敬的文化精神。张志强对当下赛珍珠研究进行反思后,认为应该增强元批评意识,注重批评方法的多元和综合,提高批评的对话意识。徐清认为对赛珍珠的文化边际性进行阐释,是比较贴近其思想境界和作品实际的。在赛珍珠研究中,我们应该既“不虚美”,又“不隐恶”,以实事求是的态度还其一个真面目。

Guo Yingjian thinks that Pearl Buck studies in today’s China are lacking in the close readingand analysis of numbers of her works,hence an intentional or unintentional neglect of her literary value.Therefore,the study of her literary works should be strengthened.In Yao Junwei’s opinion,Chinese scholarshave made some achievements in the study of Pearl Buck’s non-fiction since“the New Phase”,which hasbrought about“the turn fromfiction to non-fiction”in Pearl Buck studies.However,because her non-fictionalwritings are very rich,and that they embody her cultural spirit more directly and forcefully,we need to makegreater efforts in this respect.After a careful consideration of the present Pearl Buck studies,Zhang Zhiqiangholds that Chinese researchers should cultivate the consciousness of meta-criticism more,combine differentcritical perspectives and promote a dialogical consciousness.Xu Qing argues that to interpret Pearl Buck’scultural marginality is to understand the essence of her ideology and her works;and in the study,we should befrank with her shortcomings and inadequacy so as to knowher as she is.
