Cultural misreading is inevitable in literary translation. This paper aims to classify cultural misreading and then to explore its causes, drawing on Andrew Chestcrrnan's models of translation ethics. It is argued that cultural misreading reflects the translator's obedience to different ethical modes in different historical periods. Therefore, the change of cultural misreading indicates the change of the translator's ethical conception and the improvement of his self-consciousness.
