摘要
现代社会学术分工与分科日益琐细,在求专求精的趋势下,知识受到严重的割裂。影响所及,培育出来的人才只有零碎的知识与技能,而无整体的观念与思想;只有本位主义浓厚的学者专家,而无宏观视野的知识分子。面对如此困境,西方大学自我检讨,提出普通教育(generaleducation)的理念作为解决问题的方案。近些年来台湾亦重视普通教育的实施,“教育部”于2003年至2004年间对7所研究型大学进行普通教育评鉴,结果发现仍有许多改进的空间。本文旨在比较台湾与美国研究型综合大学普通教育的内涵与实施,进而提出对普通教育的改进建议。
As academic fields get more specialized, knowledge becomes more fragmented. Universities, therefore, prepare specialized workforce without holistic perspectives. In the United States, general education provided to undergraduates is viewed as key to solving the problem. In Taiwan, general education has also been implemented but still has room for improvement. This study compares and contrasts general education in the United States and Taiwan, and further provides insights into improvement in general education.
