A large number of southern intellectuals were obliged to migrate to the north after the unification. During the period of the Sui and early Tang Dynasties, most of them became literary chamberlains as a result of their specialties as well as the repulsive tendency of the ruling classes out of some political and cultural dilemmas. Their experiences had helped to foster the ethos of the ruling classes.
