Control and Movement in the Minimalist Program

控制理论是生成语法的一个子理论,因其不确定性一直是生成语法学者争论的焦点。Hornstein(1999)修改最简方案的一些理论假设,提出了控制的移位理论,认为控制即移位,引起一些学者的质疑。本文首先对有关控制与移位关系的争论作一介绍,然后以汉语语言事实为基础,考察两者之间的关系。本文发现控制的移位理论可以解释汉语的一部分控制事实,但无法解释另外的一些情况,因为控制虽然本质上是句法问题,但控制语的选择还涉及语义和语用等诸多因素。

Control theory is a sub-theory of Chomsky＇s generative grammar and has aroused much discussion since its inception due to its indeterminacy. Based on modifications of some minimalist assumptions, Hornstein （1999） puts forward Movement Theory of Control （MTC）, arguing that control is movement. His viewpoint is challenged by some other scholars. This paper first introduces the debates on the relation between control and movement, and then tentatively probes into this issue based on the control facts in Chinese. This paper finally concludes that MTC can only account for some of the control facts in Chinese, since the choice of controllers also involves semantic and pragmatic factors though control is syntactic in nature.
