Contemporary esthetics and social theories have both responded to the issue of esthetic modernity. Their responses provide a frame of reference for a possible interpretation of modernism and the avant-garde art. ＂The Definition of Art as an Esthetic Issue＂ is concerned with how art is defined in the modern context. ＂Critical Reflections on ＂Institutional Art＇＂ begins with a comparison of three theories on institutional art with an emphasis on the analysis of Burger＇s theory.＂The Formal Significance of the Avant-garde＂ discusses the renewing art of the avant-garde and its formalistic tendency. The above three papers treat the issues of esthetics posed by modern art as their object of study and provide a concentrated discussion on the esthetic theories responding to those issues.
