This paper discusses the imagery used in the characterization of heroines in the love theme of Shakespearean drama and traditional Chinese drama. Further comparisons in deep structure and social background demonstrate the different concerns in the two dramatic traditions as to the presentation of sexual love. The paper also discusses the respective aesthetic values of Shakespearean drama and traditional Chinese drama concerning the presentation of the relationship of lovers.
