Frequent and large financial crises have been challenging the international monetary fund （IMF） and its functions in recent years and the calls for reforming the IMF have been the subject of mounting voice in international community. In the United States, the dominating opinion on reforming the IMF is strengthening its role both in crises prevention and in crises management, opposing providing a large scale of rescue package when dealing with international financial crises. The opinion has its rationality,but has its obvious disadvantage as well. The reform of the IMF should follow the principles of equity and openness. The IMF should continue to make progress in its institutional innovation and governance reform,and adjust its functions with the changing of the global economic situation.
