The Thirty Years' War in Europe served as a prelude to modern international relations. The various royal kingdoms represented by France witnessed an increasingly stronger awareness of national sovereignty and national interests. The distribution of interests stipulated in the Treaty of Westphalia signed after the war also epitomized the national interests of the warring states.
