刘铭传近代化思想剖析

On the modernization thought of Liu Ming-chuan

刘铭传在台湾视番民为朝廷赤子;实施新政,提倡以商立国;兴铁路、挖煤矿均取得卓著成绩;首创近代邮政竟早于大陆。因知识局限,终仍袭乃师“官总其纲”。

Liu Ming-chuan contributed all his efforts to T aiwan, such as being friendly to the original inhabitants, education developing, setting up defenses, constructing railway, exploiting mine, launching postal service. He advocated founding the country by business rather than by agriculture,the old traditional pattern.And these lead to good effect. In the practice,however,the business policy he recommended still acted by the government＇s domination. Consequently he could not understand all the meaning of the modernization in that time.
