The process of the early American movement towards the West is actually a process of massacre of American Indians. The article points out that James Fenimore Cooper has sympathy with American Indians, but at the same time showing his ambiguities on many issues. Cooper has set apart a character of ideal qualities, confined them within a ＂lower class citizen,＂ and thus ultimately disregarded gender,class,and race,in his efforts to redefine a standard.
