The doctrine of the mean in traditional Chinese philosophy was derived from the Book of Changes (Yi) , which advocates a balaneed middle approach to life problems, when it regarded all good results were presented by the propitious mean position of Yao. The ideology was inherited and developed by both Confucianism and Taoism, but each in different ways. Confucianism upheld the practice of the doctrine of the mean and therefore developed a value of moderation between extremes. On the other hand, Taoism preached for going back to the original state of man, and valued retun'ng to nature and taking no action. Like the two sides of a coin, Confucianism and Taoism worked together to have perfected the unique value of the golden mean, which played the most important role in Chinese culture.
