Construction and Deconstruction of Ultimate Spiritual Values in Go Down, Moses

福克纳被标定为代表性的现代主义作家的原因,与其说是他和乔伊斯和艾略特一样大胆采用先锋革命性的艺术手法来表现一个破碎化的世界,还不如说是他们在20世纪精神意义匮乏中,寻找人类终极精神价值上存在着共性。但福克纳的深刻性还表现在其作品中存在的悖论,即在建构精神价值的同时又在对其合理性进行置疑。在《去吧,摩西》中,福克纳在揭露南方奴隶制的罪恶和种族不平等以及北方资本主义文明的同时,努力建构一个像济慈的希腊古瓮一样的乌托邦的唯美的道德价值模式,来救赎南方的罪恶,但同时福克纳又在南方社会历史文化语境中试图消解这种价值模式,从而表现出一种自我解构的倾向。

The reason why Faulkner is labeled as a representative modernist writer is not so much that he adopts the radical and revolutionary artistic techniques Hke Joyce and Eliot to represent a fragmented world as that they share the endless pursuit of ultimate spiritual values in a lost world, but Faulkner＇s profoundness still lies in his interrogation of these values while constructingthem. In Go Down, Moses, while disclosingthe slavery system, racial inequality and all the evils brought about by the invasion of northern capitalism in American southern society, William Faulkner also endeavors to construct a set of utopian aesthetic moral values, eternal like the Grecian urn in Keatian poems. However, while in affirming the values, Faulkner still attempts to deconstruct the aesthetic moral values in the social, historical and cultural context of the American South, thus revealing atendency o fself-deconstruction.
