Qiu Fengjia: The Originator of Modern Taiwan Hakka Literature

丘逢甲是我国近代杰出的爱国诗人、教育家,也是台湾近代客家文学之祖。作为爱国诗人,他以诗针砭时弊,抒写忧世济世的怀抱、思乡之情和恢复之志。其诗具有英雄豪杰慷慨激昂、雄伟悲壮的风格。他又是近代“诗界革命一钜子”,诗歌最能体现古典与现代的结合。作为一位客籍诗人,他写出不少具有客家山歌风味和客家乡土风情的作品。

Qiu Fengj ia is not only a prominent patriotic poet and educationist in modern Chinese history, but also the originator of modern Taiwan Hakka literature. As a patriotic poet, he employs poems as a weapon for criticizing the evils of the times and as a tool for expressing his homesickness and deep concern for the reform of the then society. His poems are characterized by the heroic spirit of a great revolutionary poet. By combining classicism and modernism, the Hakka poet has composed a series of works with the distinctive local flavor of Hakka folk songs.
