The editorial board of the Global Oil Economy presented at the beginning of 2006 the 'projection of highlights in oil development at home and abroad in 2006', based upon its interview with six experts. Zhang Hongtu, vice director of the Global Economy Institute under China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations, discussed the hot issues in the field of energy diplomacy and cooperation among big powers in 2006, including the relations of China with the US, Russia, India and Japan as well as the nuclear problem in Iran. China will seek to expand and diversify its scope and approach regarding cooperation and will diversify and increase its dialogue with partners and competitors, all the while conducting this with greater openness. Other experts from the Development Research Center of the State Council, RIPP, CECA, China High-tech Green Energy Development Commission and CPPEI, expressed their views on the potential change in the domestic oil price and supply and demand of energies, the trends of development in energy taxation policies, the deregulation and supervision of the oil product market, and environmental protection and security in the petrochemical sector. According to these experts, the major energies will still be undersupplied in the domestic market; the domestic oil price will pick up speed in its integration with the global oil price; the objectives set for energy conservation will be fulfilled; the Central Government will move on to rectify the price relations among oil products ,and unveil new oil taxation policies, put in place an efficient mechanism for oil product market supervision and perfect the market withdrawal mechanism in 2006. When it comes to the petrochemical development, environmental protection and security in 2006 and the next few years, the domestic petrochemical sector will speed up its restructuring, and facilitate the clean fuel production, according to the experts. They also set forth suggestions on how to address the hazards associated with natural gas supply.
