杜牧创作思想的核心就是“为文以意为主”、“诗要少加以理”。获得“意”和“理”的途径主要为继承性的学习与创造性的适变。杜牧创作思想最终的目的就是要有为而作,针砭现实,教化社会。如果这种与现实的联系无法在当世实现,那就将创作指向未来,求知己于后世。由此可以看出,他的创作思想大体属于儒家阵营,与道家创作思想不同。
