This paper studies the cultural differences between the English and Chinese metaphors from the perspective of the material, institutional and psychological culture. English and Chinese people tend to use the same metaphors when the two cultures overlap but they choose different metaphors when their cultures conflict, It reveals a close relationship between the culture and the language. Language reflects culture and is influenced by culture. Therefore theunderstanding of the language depends on the knowledge of the culture,which is essential to the understanding of the language.
