As a rhetorical device both in the English and the Chinese languages. metaphor selects things that are familiar to people as vehicles to describe the features, the essence or the abstract philosophy of the ontology. This rhetorical device is used a great deal both in the English and the Chinese languages to achieve vivid expression. This article discusses the general and specific character of English and Chinese metaphor, and the comparison between them enables students to have a better understanding of their differences and similarities so as to overcome the difficulties in students＇ learning of metaphor and to improve their abilities in social intercourse.
