On December 10, 2005, the core project of Shanghai International Shipping Center, the Yangshan Deepwater Harbor, after three years’ construction, is opened. Outside the mouths of Hangzhou Bay and Yangtze River and southeast to the Luchao Harbor of Shanghai, Yangshan Harbor has shown its magnificence. Five container berths have been arranged along the first- phase 1,600-meter-long bank line of the port, nine high super-panama bridge cranes now stands on the port, and the land area covering 1.5 square kilometers by sea-filling has formed. The depth of deepwater berths measures over 15 meters, and their designed annual handling capacity is 2.2 million TEU. The East Sea Bridge as an auxiliary project of Yangshan Harbor is also completed. To become an international economic, finance and trade center, Shanghai must have a matching international shipping center. In the 1990s, China set the strategic goal of accelerating the construction of Shanghai International Shipping Center. And in 1995, Shanghai listed its deepwater harbor as an important question for research. After a lot of careful and detailed discussion and preparation, the area of Yangshan Deepwater Harbor was officially listed in the State-Council- approved òGeneral Plan of the Development of the City of Shanghaió in 2001. By 2006, the volume handled by the first-phase project of Yangshan Deepwater Harbor is expected to reach 3 million TEU. Combined with the current berth capacity of Shanghai Harbor, the whole harbor is expected to have a handling capacity of 21 million TEU, close to the world?s first and second harbors in terms of volume handled at Hong Kong and Singapore. When completing construction and going into operation by the end of 2005, Yangshan Deepwater Harbor will increase the competitiveness of Shanghai International Shipping Center among harbors in the Northeastern Asia, and enlarge the transferring size of international containers. To bring into play the engine and key role of Shanghai will drive along the economic development of the Yangtze Delta, the Yangtze Valley and the whole country.
