P.A. Heelan and the Hermeneutic Philosophy of Science

P. A. Heelan is one of pioneers in the contemporary hermeneutic philosophy of science. This article introduced his life and his two main works: Quantum Mechanics and Objectivity: A Study of the Philosophy of Werner Heisenberg and Space-Perception and the Philosophy of Science. This article also introduced a series of his statements on hermeneutic and phenomenological philosophy of science: (1) Lifeworld, theory of being and horizontal realism. (2) The intentional unity of subject and object in the Lifeworld. Perspectivistic epistemology. (3) The method of hermeneutic circle (or spiral). Interpretative work of this kind is historical, cultural, and anthropological, multi-disciplinary in character. (4) Heidegger's view of truth, alethia for truth, different from the traditional correspondence or coherence theory of truth. (5) Emphasizing meaning, value, and the role of metaphor in science. Advocating studying aspects of science for which the traditional philosophy of science is not well equipped, such as scientific discovery, ethics of science, etc.
