CUSBEA Program and its Influence on the Development of Life Science in China

20世纪80年代,美籍分子生物学家、美国康乃尔大学教授吴瑞(RayWu)发起中美生物化学联合招生项目(China-United States Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Examination and Adminis trationP rogram,简称CUSBEA项目),在中国选拔优秀学生赴美国学习生物化学和分子生物学。该项目自1981年开始至1989年结束,先后派出了422名学生赴美攻读生物学科博士学位。该项目为中国培养了一批生命科学的杰出人才。本文回顾了CUSBEA项目的实施过程、CUSBEA学生赴美后的学习情况、CUSBEA学生组织的交流活动,讨论了CUSBEA项目实施对中国生命科学发展所产生的影响。

In 1980's, Ray Wu, a professor of molecular biology and genetics at Cornell University, initiated the China-U.S. Biochemistry Examination and Administration (CUSBEA) program, which placed over 400 Chinese doctoral students in American universities between 1982 and 1989. Up to now,this program has cultivated a group of talented scientists who are activating in top area of life science. This paper discusses the program's initiation and establishment, and its procedure of student selection. Also, this paper analyzes the occupation distribution of some CUSBEA scholars by statistics and introduces their current conditions. Furthermore, this paper elaborates the importance of CUSBEA scholars to China and discusses the contribution of this program to the development of life science in China. This paper concludes that the CUSBEA program was a great success because it educated a group of highly talented Chinese scientists in life science, who have been serving for China these years. This program has contributed to the overall development of life science in China.
