A collection of Manchu masque drawings which were regarded as the 'living fossils of Shamanism' were discovered in Heilongjiang Province. The significant discovery has drawn the attention of experts and scholars of many disciplines in and out of China. The drawings are considered as the 'miracle of the Chinese folk art at the end of 20th century'. Compared with the masque culture in South China such as the masques in Luo drama, Manchu masques are characteristic of rich connotations, a long history, primitive mystery, bright colors and different styles. They are of special values in research and aesthetics.
