On the Relation between "the Balcony" and Zhang Ai-ling's Literary Writing

阳台是张爱玲作品中的一种重要意象,在她的小说和散文中反复出现。阳台与张爱玲作创作的关系在于:它培养了张爱玲独特的观察视角———俯视和远眺。由于俯视,站在阳台上构思的作品便具有了一种对人性的洞悉和达观,因而也充满了悲天悯人的情怀;远眺的视角造成了张爱玲对世俗的态度,即“就而不从,于其中但隔其外”。

The balcony, an important image in the works of Zhang Ai-ling, appears repeatedly in her novels and prose. The relation between the balcony and Zhang Ai-ling＇ s literary writing consists in the cultivation of Zhang Ai-ling＇s unique angle of vision-overlooking and looking far ahead. It is because of overlooking that her works composed at the balcony are endowed with a thorough and philosophical insight into humanity and with compas- sionate feelings. And the vision of looking far ahead constituted Zhang＇ s attitude towards common customs, i.e. ＂ stand aloof from the wordly affairs.＂
