This paper aims to discuss the complexities involved in the leftist literature and art as well as popular urban literature by targeting the "urban literature" as viewed in the leftist literary and artistic circles in the 1940s. The then so-called "urban literature" differed markedly from the popular fiction centered on the countryside in the liberated areas. By analyzing The Story of Xiaqiu-a "novel for petty city-dwellers", this paper attempts to explore, in the process of "the unitary" literary practice in the late 1940s, the attitude of leftist writers and artists to and their proposed ideal for "urban literature" as well as their norm of evaluation.
