Storm Does not Blow in Vain——Earnest Hemingway Hills like White Elephants

“用埃拉.庞德的话讲写作的艺术在于简洁。”那就是用最简单最清晰的话语。海明威的作品尤其如此。《如白象般的群山》便是一个很好的例子。文章中没有太多的背景描写,基本由对话组成,给卖者留下很大的想象空间。本文运用言语行为及对话合作原则分析看似简单实则丰富的对话,由此发掘出小说蕴涵的深意。

However, the deceptive simplicity can be highly suggestive. Hills llke White Elephants is a good specimen. In this short story, there are few non - verbal contextual elements. Readers have only verbal contextual elements - the conversation to rely on. This paper attempts to interpret the understated feeling of the story with the help of the speech act theory and the co - operative principles of the conversation. It first sets out with an overview of the speech act theory and cooperation principles of the conversation, and then applies the theories to the analysis of the conversation between the characters of the story. This paper will be concluded with the idea that speaking is acting - the colorless conversation demonstrates a stormy conflict and storm never blows in vain.
