Pingyao lacqerworks are referred to as a“unique handicraft”.Through hundreds of years of development, they remain popular in the mid-Shanxi area. Xue Shengjin,as the oldest lacqerwork craftsman in Pingyao Town,has been engaged in the crafts- manship for over 40 years.He has not only rescued the vanishing traditional manufacturing skill but also resumed and created about 20 new techniques and cultivated more than 100 apprentices,carrying for- ward the craftsmanship of Pingyao lacqerwork. Thanks to him,Pingyao lacqerworks have become very popular.Yet,the impetuousness of his appren- tices weighs heavily on his mind.Under the lure of money and profits,who will shoulder the responsi- bility of inheriting and carrying forward the traditional craftsmanship?In the hullabaloo of the whole town, the old man is trying his utmost to hold his own ground.
