The paper discussed some problems of type selection for main transformer in 500 kV larger scale substation. The existent problems were analyzed and compared in detail such as selection of 500 kV single phase and three - phase transformer, cooling way of transformer, losses of no load and short circuit, selection of autotransformer and un - autotransformer, voltage regulation mode, antishort circuit ability, the impedance parameter, transformer oil, transformer accessories, bidding price and its influencing factors.
