In each of Robert Browning' s four dramatic monologues, "My Last Duchess', "Andrea del Sarto", "Porphyria' s Lover" and "Golden Hair', there is always a woman who is enclosed, suppressed and tried in her absence; however, this enclosure is often resisted and eventually removed at the end of these poems. It is the contest between the efforts to enclose and the efforts against the enclosure that makes up the poems' dramatic conflicts and inner tensions, as well as the author' s unique point of view beyond those of the narrators'.
