This paper aims at probing Dimmesdale＇s mental movement in The Scarlet Letter by analyzing the cohesion system and the theory of field,mode,tenor and themetic progression in his speech. The Scarlet Letter is a masterpiece of American Romanticism and the better comprehension of the hero——Dimmesdale＇s mentality can deepen the understanding towards the novel.
