2005年中国周边形势复杂多变。朝核问题在曲折中向和平解决迈进。中美关系出现了新的积极变化。中日关系受到严重阻碍，政治矛盾有所加剧。美国在中亚的扩张受挫。中俄合作不断拓展。形势的发展也使中国周边外交面临新的机遇和挑战。

The peripheral situation of China in 2005 was complicated and changeable as well. The Korean nuclear issue forged ahead towards a peaceful solution amidst twists and turns. Some new positive changes had taken place in the relationship between China and the U.S., while the Sino-Japanese relations had met with great obstacles and intensifying political contradiction. The U.S. expansion in Central Asian region endured setbacks. Cooperation between China and Russia continued to broaden. Development of events had confronted China with new opportunities and challenges in its peripheral foreign policy.
