The Origin and Evolution of the Chinese Character Wa(袜)

“袜”是“襪”的现代简化字,也是一个古代简体字。“袜”不一定是“襪”的后起异体字,表“袜子”义的“袜”与表“肚兜”义的“袜”不是同形字关系。

Wa（袜） is the recently simplified Chinese character of Wa（袜） and an old simplified character as well. Wa（袜） is not necessarily the later variant of Wa（袜）. There is not a relationship of Tongxingzi（同形字） between the character Wa（袜） meaning sockets and the character Wa（袜） meaning underwear.
