Am ong others, the m ost im por- tant type of m usic, I think, is world ethnic m usic, also called“ world m usic”in for- eign countries.Since the 20 century, anthropologists and ethnom usicologists all over th the world have m ade extensive surveys and researches on the ethnic m usic in the five continents. For dozens of years, advanced technologies have been used to m ake audio and visual recordings of the ethnic m usic and dance worldwide, and enorm ous am ounts of valuable inform ation have been collected, enabling us to have an overall view of the world’s m usic cultures. The world ethnic m usic, created on this basis, is a new m usic discipline for the 21st century.By com bining com parative m usicology, ethnom usicology and m usic anthropolo- gy, it presents a colourful and brilliant garden of m usic by the peoples in the world. A ccording to recent statistics by the U N , there are altogether 5000nationalities in , the whole world. It is estim ated that the world has 10,000kinds of ethnic m usic and 40,000kinds of m usical instrum ents. The world can be divided into 9or 11geo- graphical zones by ethnic m usic cultures: East A sia, South Asia, South-East A sia,A rab ( W est A sia and N orth A frica), Central A sia, W est Europe, East Europe, Black Africa, Latin A m erica, N orth A m erica and O ceania.Am ong them , A rab and Central A sia, or East Europe and W est Europe can be either separate or com bined together. In addition, there are som e special m usic cultures that can not be divided by regions or countries, such as the Jewish, the Gypsy, the Kurdish and the Sam i ( also called Lapp). V arious races or ethnic groups on the earth have m ade various contributions to the m usic cultures of the hum anity: the Chinese, Indians, A rabs and A m erican Indians, who are good at m usic m elodies, are m ostly focusing on planar or linear m usic con- ception; the Europeans, good at harm ony and polyphony, are m ainly focusing on cubic m usic conception; and the Black A fricans and A fro-A m ericans so skilled in rhythm , are m ainly focusing on jum ping and dynam ic m usic conception. They high- light different aspects of their m usic cultures in their distinctive form s, representing their own m usic talents and special values. In a sense, Latin A m erican m usic is fu- sion and sublim ation of the above three types. It is only after we have had prim ary understanding of the different m usic cultures in the world that we can have an objective, fair and egalitarian view of the world eth- nic m usic. The concept of“ Europe as the Centre”, which was used to appraise eth- nic m usic in the other parts of the world by applying the absolute standards of the European m usic and art, is in change.O nly after getting rid of pride and prejudice can we then study the various characteristics of different m usic cultures, and will discover countless m usic treasures, shining and colourful, leading us into a world ofbeautiful sounds.
