模块是一组既有相同功能和相同结合要素，又有不同性能或用途但能互换的产品基本单元。石油机械均可看成由多个模块组成，模块内容应包括每个零件的信息，模块自身的信息以及模块间相互关系、关联与拓扑信息。模块化设计包括建造模块和综合模块两方面内容，智能支持环境的石油机械模块化设计过程分为方案设计、布置设计和仿真显示三个步骤。模块化设计的核心是模块的设计，合理地划分并建造模块是设计的关键。
