The forms capable of expressing the modality of possibility are spread across various levers of language structure depending on their morphological and syntactical characteristics. This paper is an attempt to exhibit and explore the similarities and differences between the English and Chinese modality of possibility from a functional-pragmatic point of view, which would show the complex nature and multi-functional character of this category.
