A significant reason underlying many attacks from literary critics on stylistics is “circularity”. The present study argues that the so-called “circularity” is not an inherent characteristic of stylistics, but a feature arising from many stylisticians' purposes of investigation. In order to make stylistic analysis useful to literary criticism, it is necessary to aim at revealing previously-neglected deeper meanings of the text. This essay forms an attempt to bring to light, mainly by way of transitivity analysis, the deeper symbolic significance of various language features of Hughes' “On the Road”. Through shedding new light on the text, the present study also shows that stylistic analysis is helpful to the understanding of the complex relation between the real author and the implied author.
