A New Interpretation of the Chinese Concept of "Face"

对两个问题的解决是研究中国人脸面问题的必要前提:一是“脸面”的分类问题,二是“脸面”概念的定义问题。很多学者认可“脸”和“面子”的分类,或者与其类似的“道德性脸面”和“社会性脸面”的分类。学者们对“脸面”的定义则是莫衷一是。本文通过对“脸面”这一社会心理现象的心理成分的分析,提出了“脸面”的全新定义。根据这一定义,将“脸面”划分为“评价性脸面”和“互动性脸面”。“脸”和“面子”的区别也得到了合理的理论阐释。

There are two prerequisites for the study of the Chinese concept of ＂face＂. One is to differentiate the content of ＂face＂ ; the other is to define the concept of ＂face＂. Many scholars consent to the differentiation of ＂lian＂ and ＂nfianzi＂, or the similar division of ＂moral face＂ and ＂social face＂. As to the definition of ＂face＂, scholars cannot come to an agreement so far. With an effort to analyze the psychological contents of ＂face＂, this paper gives a completely new definition of ＂face＂. ＂evaluative face＂ and ＂interactive face＂ is made. explained successfully. According to this new definition, Thus the difference between ＂lian＂ and ＂mianzi＂ can beexplained successfully.
